Inbuilt brain circuit, could be the answer to insomnia

Scientists have discovered that the brain has a sleep-wake circuit system. They tired this circuit to a reward system used by the brain. The researchers explain that the body is wired to go to sleep and wake at specific times.

The scientists also demonstrated that the body is more likely to go to sleep after one accomplishes something, in essence, Sleep is a reward for the hard work put in. The researchers explained that this perhaps explains why it is easy for toddlers and older people to sleep. Toddlers feel accomplished very easily while older people believe they had already accomplished what they need to do.

30 percent of Americans between 20 and 40 years are insomniac. But the scientists explain that their treatment may be all wrong. "This has potential enormous clinical relevance," said Luis de Lecea, senior scientist in the team. "Insomnia, a multibillion-dollar market for pharmaceutical companies, has traditionally been treated with drugs such as benzodiazepines that nonspecifically shut down the entire brain, Now we see the possibility of developing therapies that, by narrowly targeting this newly identified circuit, could induce much higher-quality sleep,"

Dr. De Lecea insisted that therapy could be a more viable solution to medication. Medication simply shuts off your brain, creating a false sense of sleep. This will perhaps explain why insomniacs wake up still feeling tired and unachieved because the brain wasn't feeling achieved before going to bed.
He explained that giving therapy to the victim and making them feel more accomplished, may trigger the sleep-wake pattern of its regular circuit. But insisted that this may be easier said than done.
